About Sky-Fi:

Sky-Fi recycles, modifies and alters vintage audio equipment.  As a listener of unlabelable/self-released/small label/odd format/fringe music, I noticed that many who championed this type of music seemed to feel inextricably linked to low fidelity playback.  Moreover the source components (i.e. turntables, cassette decks, etc.) for these mediums that are being produced today are not nearly of the quality of those of days past.  What passes as a turntable or amplifier in today’s market is unfortunate, especially considering these units that were manufactured for less than 5% of their retail cost in some warehouse in a foreign country.   However, despite this obvious lack of quality, it seems that with the coming of the digital age people tend to think that listening to music is an i-pod hooked up to a shoddy docking station, or plastic computer speakers, or a record player with built in speakers that one bought at Urban Outfitters.  This isn’t a situation unusual to audio equipment, but part of the popular trend towards a more, cheaper, disposable mentality.  Marketing has become king, and quality becomes a distant consideration. This is very wrong on multiple levels, as the consumptive neurosis that this ideology breeds is rather toxic to the human soul.  However, I believe the market for these units continues to flourish due to the lack of a better, affordable alternative that people are aware of.  Some people in resistance to this try and pull the soulful looking record player, or walnut speakers that have been sitting in their parents garage or in some corner of a thrift store, but quickly find that they units are in need of love, and without a background in how to repair such things they too put up their hands and resign to the status quo.   This is the gap Sky-Fi looks to bridge.  They were right that the quality that can be had with a little looking on the used market can seriously eclipse and put to shame anything on the shelves of popular electronics retailers. Unfortunately, they units show their age and are either damaged/ not working at all or not working at their original specifications and the majority of listeners do not have the skills to repair these and so they become destined for the back corners of garages and thrift stores.  Sky-Fi hand picks the finest of these units from the glory days of analog playback and churns out something grand and original in its own right.  One at a time these are recovered from the detritus and revitalized.  Being neither old nor new, Sky-Fi units come out the other side somewhere in between… a holy spirit that bridges these two worlds.   With Sky-Fi’s love these intrepid travelers from the past will grace new ears and change the way you experience music that you care most about.  Sky-Fi will change the way you receive and experience transmissions forever.
